Community Music School Teen Band

4:30-6:00pm, 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month

For ages 12-19. Participants play in an ensemble, developing musicianship, flexibility, and musical creativity. The class meets on the first and third Thursdays from 4:30-6:00pm at the London Nelson Center in Santa Cruz. Fiddle teacher John Weed facilitates the group, arranging music from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Norway, Sweden, and the United States, in addition to modern and more quirky pieces. Instruments welcomed include fiddle, viola, flute, tin whistle, pipes, cello, upright bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, autoharp, ukulele, Celtic harp, accordion and bodhran (Irish circle drum). Students must have at least two years experience on their instrument; the ability to read sheet music and chord symbols is a plus, as is experience in the genre of traditional folk music. The group performs occasionally at various events as a community service.

The cost to participate is on a sliding scale, from $0 to $10 per session, to help defray the costs of instruction and facility rental. Potential students are welcome to come for a session and see if they like it – no obligation!
